  1. WHISPERS IN THE NIGHT: frontispiece - A black ink and black color pencil drawing on a 11 x 14 size coquille board. It appears as the frontispiece in the book, "Whispers in the Night," by basil Copper.

Most of us have an optimistic faith in man's creative ability to invent machines to triumph over our problems, we have invented all kinds of electro-mechanical-optical devices to take care of us in every way. There seems to be no challenge that we cannot overcome through the invention and use of machines, they will eventually take us to the stars, which is our destiny.

But we also have problems to solve that lie deep inside our minds where demons abide tearing at our souls. Psychiatrists of course have a pill that blocks those demons, acting like a jailor keeping them locked in their brain cells. But the pill needs to be taken regularly, for without it the cell door opens, and the demons return. We need a machine like the one in this drawing; it is pulling those monsters out of the woman's brain, completely.

And maybe we also need to invent a pocket sized machine, or perhaps modify our cell phones so that they BEEP whenever someone is lying to us. Can you imagine all the beeping that would start going on all over the world? On the other hand, wouldn't the beeping silence the liars and bring a welcome quietness to our lives? Wouldn't that be wonderful?

Machines! They are now as important to us as is the air we breathe.
